The spinal column, a curved structure composed of vertebrae connected by intervertebral discs, extends from the base of the skull to the coccyx, housing the spinal cord at its center.

Divided into five regions and consisting of 33 vertebrae interconnected by joints and strong ligaments, the spine performs vital functions. Besides generating back pain, it enables flexion, extension, rotation, and tilting of the trunk in various directions, protecting the spinal cord and supporting the weight of the upper body.

Repetitive movements, poor physical condition, improper lifting of weights, long periods of sitting, and stress are major causes of back pain. Although most problems are not severe, they can become chronic and limiting without proper diagnosis and treatment.

Types of Spinal Problems

The primary symptom related to the spine is pain. The Osteopath is a trained professional to distinguish whether back pain originates from musculoskeletal issues or if it is a condition requiring medical referral.

In the musculoskeletal context, painful symptoms are notable due to conditions such as:

  • Herniated and protruding discs;
  • Arthrosis (spondyloarthrosis and uncartrosis);
  • Disc bulges;
  • Symptomatic kyphosis and lordosis;
  • Loss of mobility;
  • Poor posture;
  • Scoliosis;
  • Contractures;
  • Etc.

Benefits of Osteopathy

The assessment and diagnosis are patient-centered. Each individual has different needs, making the assessment crucial to understanding the origin, maintenance, and creating a plan to definitively eliminate back pain.

Specific manual techniques are applied, tailored to the patient's physical condition, age, and profession, explained and consented to beforehand. By addressing the cause of back pain, therapeutic goals can be achieved.
