Episodes of tingling sensations in the arms, hands, legs, and feet, by themselves, are not a pathology but rather a symptom that should be integrated into a comprehensive clinical picture to achieve a diagnosis. As Osteopaths, we are accustomed to treating such issues and identifying their causes.

Two systems are responsible for tingling sensations: the nervous system and/or the circulatory system. This can occur for various reasons. All nerves and blood vessels of the arms and hands originate in the neck, descending through muscles and joints to the fingers. Along this path, areas of compression may arise, causing these symptoms.

Some common reasons for tingling, swelling, or numbness in the hands include:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: The carpal tunnel, a fibrous sheath in the wrist, can become tight or swollen, causing tingling or numbness in the first three fingers, especially at night or upon waking.
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: The lower cervical region and the area around the collarbone are zones of restriction for nerves and vessels. Trauma or postural problems in this area can lead to tingling. In this case, it is common for the arm and/or the hand and fingers to feel numb.
  • Neck Dysfunction or Disc Herniations: All nerves in our arms originate in the neck; if the corresponding joints are restricted or dysfunctional, there may be symptoms in the hands. Disc protrusions and herniations in the neck region can also affect nerves, presenting symptoms such as numbness or tingling in the hands.

HOW OSTEOPATHY CAN HELP?

The Osteopath will diagnose the cause of tingling sensations, provide specific treatment to correct the problem at its source, and promote the recovery and normal functioning of the body. The osteopath, a trained healthcare professional, is also capable of diagnosing more serious conditions and referring to a doctor if necessary. In the mentioned issues, Osteopathy is recognized as a non-invasive, safe, and effective approach to treatment.
